This study introduces a novel neuroimaging method that combines high temporal and spatial resolution to detect neuronal activity. Using a two-dimensional fast line-scan approach, millisecond precision in imaging neuronal activity while maintaining the high spatial resolution characteristic of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was achieved. This technique was validated through in vivo imaging of mouse brains at 9.4 tesla during electrical stimulation of the whisker pad. High correlation between the MRI signals and neural activity was confirmed using in vivo spike recording and optogenetics. The method successfully captured the sequential and layer-specific propagation of neuronal activity along the thalamocortical pathway. This innovation in high-resolution imaging provides a powerful tool for advancing our understanding of brain function and the dynamics of neural networks.
